Logan is a 9 yo 17h blood bay thoroughbred gelding, never raced. He has a sweet, kind disposition. Good around kids, dogs, and busy environments. He is good with other horses in a pasture setting. His best job would be light riding (trails, flatwork) and turn out would be a plus. His temperament truly is wonderful, easy to lunge, trailer, ground ties--he has had a fair amount of training over the years. Logan has arthritis in both hocks and in his front right pastern (the pastern was probably an injury). The vet suggested treating him with bute on days when he is uncomfortable. He was jumping with his prior owner and wouldn't stay sound--so he's not a candidate for performance riding. Both the vet at Pilchuck and the trainer are willing to have a conversation with anyone that is interested in adopting Logan. All medical records are available.
Update (1/11/08):
I met the absolutely charming Logan today. There is no way convey in writing what a wonderfully sweet disposition he has. I truly do not think that I have met a better mannered horse in my life. He was a doll from beginning to end, all 17hh of him! Who ever gives this boy his home for life will be getting an absolute gem. To add a bit to his sad story, this beautiful beautiful boy was literally a few hours away from being euthanized simply because he wasn't able to do the high level jumping that was expected from him, his rescuer literally saved his life. It brings tears to my eyes to think that this loving and so well-mannered horse was almost put down in the prime of his life simply because he shouldn't be jumped.
Update (1/18/08):
I got to meet Mr. Logan today! Wow, he is something special and whoever adopts him is going to be very, very lucky indeed! Logan was very polite while being groomed and tacked up. When his rescuer took him to the round pen to lunge him, he was perfect, though he showed a few times that he was feeling good with the sunny weather.
Logan was very tolerant of me climbing up on him and then trying to figure out his buttons. He was very easy to ride, very controllable, and very responsive. I did my best to stay out of his way, but at one point, my posting (and inadvertant leg pressure) caused him to pick up a canter, which was huge and rolling. I really enjoyed Logan and feel that he is a great candidate for light, casual work. He really seemed to enjoy having a job, and was extremely safe. I never felt insecure or at a disadvantage, even being on such a big horse.
Update (1/26/08):
Logan is a complete sweetheart! He's very very very sweet, super gentle, and so so well mannered! Riding him was great too! He's super safe, never once did I feel like I was in danger. He doesn't feel big at all and his TB "A" frame body makes him very easy to sit.
He definitely has the knowledge in there, its just a matter of getting his body to reconnect with it. That'll come with consistent riding and building strength in all the right places. We had a lot of fun, though I must say my eyes and nose were watering in a few short minutes of trot! LOL
Update (3/1/08):
Logan is doing great!! So far he has been sound with the level of work we've been doing--a couple of rides a week and some lunging. Because of the weather I have to use a 62 ft round pen--so we've actually been putting more stress on his hocks than I would like--but it seems just fine for him. Haven't given him any bute since I took possession of him 3 months ago.
Most importantly is his disposition. He listens, has obviously had a lot of training, doesn't overeact when outside things are happening--dogs running, foals playing, loud noises. Under saddle he's never spooked, run off or really done anything "scary".
To ride--he is lovely. He's light, has great suspension, and again listens and tries very hard. I've been working on strengthening his back end--just nice and slow--coming along nicely.
His weight is perfect, his muscle tone has improved greatly in the last eight weeks. He's agressively shedding right now and we think some of that is just better nutrition.
