How We Can Help

SAFE-Assisted Adoptions

The SAFE-Assisted Adoption program is designed to help horseowners in need find new homes for their horses. These horses will remain under the current owner's care, but SAFE will assist with permanent placements for these horses, by advertising, screening applications, conducting reference checks and site visits, and signing adoption contracts with the new owners, to assure the future well-being of the adopted horse.

This is what the SAFE-Assist Program involves:

What SAFE provides:

  1. We will list your horse on our website, on Petfinder.com, and various other websites to try to find a suitable home.
  2. We will adopt the horse out to an approved home - including full reference checks, a site visit, and an adoption contract.
  3. We will continue to monitor the horse and do yearly site visits to ensure the horse remains safe and well cared for.
  4. If at any time the adopter can no longer keep the horse, we will take the horse back into our program.

What you provide:

  1. You keep the horse in an approved facility with adequate shelter and safe fencing.
  2. You continue to care for the horse until SAFE finds the horse a home.
  3. You agree to keep the horse up to date on farrier, vet, worming and teeth floating during the time SAFE is listing the horse.
  4. You are welcome to do your own advertising of the horse, but all inquiries should go through SAFE and adopters must be SAFE-approved and sign an adoption contract.
  5. SAFE may put a small adoption fee on the horse, which would be considered a donation to SAFE if the horse places (not applicable for companion-only animals).
  6. You have the right to veto any potential adoption for the horse. You know the horse best and what the best situation for him is.
  7. You keep the horse in our Program until the horse places. The only exceptions to this rule would be if a) you decide to keep the horse or b) you decide to put the horse down.
