CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF SAFE
←back to 2009
forward to 2011→
The new decade saw SAFE really begin coming into its own. We started 2010 with 16 horses in our care and ended up with about the same number at the end of the year. In between, we took into 12 new horses and said goodbye to 11 others. One of the newcomers was a healthy foal, born just two months after the arrival of his dam, Delilah. We put six horses into training to become riding horses, and we expanded the Community Outreach program to help more horses without having to directly take them in. Financially, it was a good year, with income coming from the second HeART of the Horse and the fourth SAFE Benefit Horse Show.
Welcome, Sampson!
Delilah was one of five horses seized from their owner by King County Animal Control because of severe neglect. The horses were living in mud and manure more than a foot deep. Delilah came to SAFE underweight, with overgrown, chipped hooves and a mouth full of ulcerations from lack of dental care. She was also approximately nine months pregnant. Delilah gave birth to a healthy colt on March 26, 2010. There were some initial problems getting the youngster to latch, but within about a day and a half, she was allowing Sampson to nurse without intervention. Sampson was a strapping baby boy with a lot of energy who kept his mom on her toes until he was ready to face the world on his own.
Rescue Stories: Super (Horse) Saver, by Jeannette Parret
EXCERPT: “When I walked up to the gate, I called to him and he turned an ear towards me. I smiled and said “Bucky, come here…” He lifted his head and took a few steps toward me. I slipped inside the gate and he actually came all the way up to me. He allowed me to touch him and once I started petting his forehead and neck he started rubbing on me as if to indicate he was accepting me as an ally. It reminded me of the moment I met my rescue mare Coconut and how she came and placed her head in my chest as if to say “Please help me….” Bucky B Lucky was communicating something very similar…” Click here to read this amazing story.
Rescue Stories: Nadia, More than just a horse…
Nadia’s backstory as a rescue horse is harrowing, and it’s fair to say that it’s lucky she made it to SAFE alive. She was part of a huge Animal Control seizure back in 2010 involving 18 equines and 55 canines, who were discovered living in filthy conditions. At the time of this seizure, SAFE only had room to take on two of the horses, and the rest were placed by the animal control agency. Well, most of the rest…two horses were not placed in the time frame allowed by the county and in November 2010, they were taken to the Enumclaw Sales Pavilion and run through the auction. Nadia was one of these horses. She was purchased by a kill buyer and scheduled to be shipped to slaughter. Fortunately, SAFE found out about this before it was too late, and despite our policy to not rescue from the kill pen, we chose to make an exception for Nadia.
