Congratulations to our May Volunteer of the Month, Larry Jaffy!
At SAFE, our volunteers are truly the heart of our community. We can really only do what we do because of our amazing and generous volunteers! This month we are celebrating Larry Jaffy. Larry is an integral part of our facilities team and has held many different roles here at SAFE. We can’t say enough about these generous souls that make up the facilities team. Larry’s work has made a tremendous impact on SAFE’s ability to move properties smoothly and efficiently. As a retired building contractor, Larry has great project insight and makes sure everything is “level, plumb and square”. There’s a guaranteed eye roll if we suggest….just “eyeball it”! Being a quiet guy his wry humor always adds to the happy demeanor of the facilities team and the farm. Larry’s love of the SAFE community is seen through in his work at SAFE over many years. Larry, we appreciate you! Thank you for all that you do. Learn more about Larry below.
How and when did you first get involved with horses? Do you have one now you want to tell us about?
I first started to get involved with horses at the time my young daughter Danielle wanted to get riding lessons at an early age. My wife, daughter and I would clean horse stalls in exchange for riding lessons for her. Danielle has also worked at SAFE as one of the barn helpers and now works at home for SAFE.
What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?
I was working at a Wild Animal Rescue Sanctuary for about 3 years and decided it was time for me to do something else. Danielle asked me about helping at SAFE. She said this sanctuary needs someone with my background, in construction, on the facilities team and I decided to give SAFE a try. I enjoy the variety of projects, the opportunity to make it safer for the horses and the volunteers I am working with.
Do you have a favorite SAFE horse? If so, why?
I am really not involved in the care of the horses at Safe. I am in their paddocks when the horses have customized the fences, gates, and electrical to their liking. Due to the noise we make, horses are moved away from our work. Because of this situation, I don’t know the horses. But, I do like to watch them all running, exercising and being trained.
What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?
I belong to a model train club and involved with designing modulars for the tracks and scenery. In addition, I help out at the Cancer society thrift store when needed, to drive donations to the store. I enjoy traveling, and gardening.
Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention in your write up?
My daughter, Danielle, has supported me with Safe. My wife, Judy, supports the Cancer society by volunteering me.
