Congratulations to our July Volunteer of the Month, Meera MacDuff! Meera joined the SAFE community on a cold, dark evening in February 2024, bringing with her a warm smile and a generous heart. From day one, she has shown unwavering dedication to the care and well-being of our herd; consistently showing up each week, even while managing a busy school schedule. No task was ever too big or too small for Meera. Whether she was picking paddocks, scrubbing troughs, or washing buckets and pans, she approached every job with enthusiasm, care, and a strong work ethic. Her gentle presence is appreciated by both horses and humans alike, and her calm demeanor has made a meaningful impact on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her.

This fall, Meera will be heading off to college to study veterinary medicine; an exciting next step that perfectly aligns with her passion and talents. We’re thrilled to know she plans to continue volunteering during school breaks, and we look forward to the day when she may return to share her wisdom with us as a teacher, mentor, or even caretaker of our herd. Meera, thank you for the time, compassion, and heart you’ve given so generously to SAFE. Volunteers like you make this work possible, and we are deeply grateful to have you as part of our community. How and when did you first get involved with horses?

I first got involved with horses when I was four and my mom signed me up for lessons,

Do you have one now you want to tell us about?

I do not own a horse but my favorite horse where I ride is named Guinness and he is a quarter horse.

What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?

What I like most about volunteering at SAFE is that I get to see a different aspect of the horse world away from riding and that I feel like I am able to help.

Do you have a favorite SAFE horse?

My favorite horses are Brandy and Mahina.

What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?

When I am not at SAFE, I am typically at my barn riding or at my house hanging out with my pets.

Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention in your write up?

Both my parents support my volunteering.
