In true SAFE fashion, Mateo’s gelding turned into quite the adventure! This well-endowed boy had close to the largest testicles Dr. Lewis has ever removed for us. Because of their impressive size, Mateo experienced some swelling of the fascial scrotal tissue — affectionately referred to in layman’s terms as “extra dangly bits.” If left exposed, this tissue could have become necrotic, which would have been a serious complication.
Thankfully, Mateo was a champ. Two days in a row, he allowed our veterinarians to sedate him and lay him down for the procedure and follow-up care. Other than needing extra medication to go under and taking his time waking up, the endeavor was ultimately successful and uncomplicated.
For two weeks following the surgery, we worked Mateo three times a day to help manage the swelling. Thanks to his willing attitude, we were able to keep the swelling under control. We also gave him access to the quarter-acre dry lot during the day to encourage as much movement as possible, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Now fully healed, Mateo is ready to begin his training journey! We’re starting with groundwork in preparation for saddling and hope to see him progress quickly. With any luck, he’ll be ready for saddling within the next month — and we’re crossing our fingers for a smooth, uneventful start for this kind and gentle fellow. He will be available for adoption once he is in regular riding work and has a minimum of 30 days as a riding horse with SAFE.
