We are excited to provide an update on a very special horse that has been such a huge blessing in so many lives since his adoption from SAFE in January of 2019. As you might remember, Bowie found a new home with his current owner, Pat, where he was able to truly settle into his own self and let his personality shine. After some time, Bowie made it clear he was not quite ready for full retirement just yet and his inquisitive mischievous tendencies started to express that this Haflinger was ready for a job again.

As of November 2024, Bowie is care-leased to a long-time, family friend, Danika.

Bowie first met Danika during COVID when Danika was just 7‑years-old and they have enjoyed their visits for years. Skip ahead to Danika outgrowing and finishing a long-term lease with a very sweet pony; Danika was ready for her next step. Pat suggested Bowie for Danika and they were an instant match. Bowie’s history shows that he is not a beginner’s mount. Danika’s solid equestrian foundation through her barn of many years, 4‑H, USPC and now IEA, allowed her to be a fair match for Bowie’s big spirit.

Bowie was a bit out of shape when they first started working together, but their connection meant they made a dedicated team built on trust. The more fit Bowie becomes, the more excited he is to work! He is always curious with a mind that never shuts off as he scans the barn for activity, always poking his nose into something to get a closer look. With a steady exercise schedule, Bowie’s diet has changed and he is allowed to free feed but he has adjusted to eating less ravenously. Although Bowie is always anxious to work, we had a full blood panel done and x rays of his hooves to ensure he is up to the task of maintaining his new active lifestyle. We are happy to say that he is a very healthy gentleman. Bowie received front shoes to provide some added comfort with his increased activity level and really blossomed. His manners continue to improve with the farrier, vet and his regular body work/massages. He is really soaking up all the love and attention.

Bowie has exploded with potential as he works with Danika every day. They qualified for State with Washington’s 4‑H intermediate equestrian team, taking reserve champion in their dressage test with Danika as one of the youngest intermediate riders and left with all blue ribbons. What an achievement for both Bowie and Danika! With US Pony Club, Bowie is excelling in dressage, showjumping and cross country. Bowie has yet to reach his jumping limit! Although, we never push him. He also enjoys ground poles and has the fanciest high step with his flashy feathers. He has learned to be more comfortable with trail riding and open spaces. He has very much honed in on his trailering etiquette. He still prefers an indoor arena but lights up with excitement in an outdoor arena. Pat and her family visit Bowie as often as they can and Bowie remembers them well!

Bowie will forever be the most handsome boy, flinging his beautiful white mane from side to side as he flaunts his gorgeous self. We are truly blessed to be the guardians of “Sir Bowington” and share his amazing story. Thank you, SAFE!
