At SAFE, our volunteers are truly the heart of our community. We can only do what we do because of their incredible generosity! This month, we’re celebrating Brian Brubaker.

Brian began volunteering on a Saturday AM chore shift in 2025 and became a shift lead in 2026. Through SAFE’s First Friend program, he has brought his good humor, welcoming spirit, and boundless enthusiasm to training and supporting fellow volunteers. Even with a demanding job and long hours, Brian stays upbeat and is often the first to finish a stall. Brian’s dedication to our horses and our volunteer community shines through in everything he does.

Thank you, Brian!

How and when did you first get involved with horses? Do you have one now you want to tell us about?

I got involved with horses for the first time right here at SAFE. I was new to Seattle and looking for a meaningful way to spend some of my free time and I couldn’t be more thankful that I ended up at SAFE.

What do you like most about volunteering with SAFE?

Everything! The horses, the people, and the opportunity to help these magnificent creatures recover and move on to a better life.

Do you have a favorite SAFE horse? If so, why?

My favorite SAFE horse was Brandy. We were the same age, and she was the very first one I met here on my first day at the Redmond property.

What do you do when you are not horsing around with us?

Most of my time away from the barn is spent working on the flightline as an aircraft mechanic/inspector. When I have a little free time, I enjoy hanging out with my dogs, playing music, or wrenching on my project car

Do you have family or special people in your life who support your volunteer work that you would want us to mention in your write up?

My wonderful girlfriend, Marya. Without her support, I don’t know how I’d ever find the time or energy to make it up here to volunteer!
