Do you ever wonder where SAFE gets its funding? We were wondering the same thing…so we took a look at the numbers, and discovered some interesting facts about SAFE.

First, we looked at GRANTS and found that since SAFE began in 2005, we’ve only received $11,804 in grants. That represents 3% of our total income to date.

Next, we looked at the money raised through ADOPTIONS. Since we started this rescue, we’ve brought in a total of $32,630 in adoption fees. While that represents more than 100 horses adopted, that’s still only 9% of our total income to date. And considering that those same horses cost us more than $283,000 in care expenses…well, let’s just say that we don’t make much from adoption fees.

Next, we take in horses from ANIMAL CONTROL and in some cases — particularly when prosecution is involved — the counties reimburse us for a portion of our initial expenses in caring for these horses. To date, we’ve received just over $40,000 for Animal Control-owned horses…which represents 11% of our total income to date. Considering that SAFE continues to bear the cost of caring for these horses after Animal Control signs them over to us, that money only goes so far.

But the heart of SAFE funding is people just like you. 77% of the money we’ve raised since our inception in 2005 came from PUBLIC DONATIONS and Special Events. In amounts that range from $5 up to the occasional $5000 donation, members of the public who care about horses in need have made SAFE’s mission possible.

That is why we say we can’t do this without YOU. Larger rescues may have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on fundraising, but SAFE is truly a grass roots organization that’s making a major league difference for horses. So when you think about where to send your charitable contributions, please…think of us. We do what we do because of people just like you.
