Nova’s life at foster during the summertime is pretty sweet. Blue skies, western Washington winds, good friends, and a foster mom who meets this complex mare where she’s at each day. Life is easier some days for Nova than for others. Earlier this year when Bijou went into heat, we discovered a very interesting fact: even a spayed mare can go into heat. Without ovaries, Nova is still able to produce estrogen, but no longer has the regulating factor of progesterone to temper it. As a result, those same heat-related behaviors that initially caused such trouble for Nova reappeared. We have put Nova back on Regumate, which does seem to make a positive difference for her, but there are some days that are better than others. We are very grateful for Blair for holding such space for Nova and meeting her patiently on her terms.
