Wilma is ready to meet her future family!
At approximately 25 years old molly mule Wilma is looking for a loving home where she can enjoy her senior years as a companion. Her senior companion adoption fee is just $300.
Wilma is a joy to be around. Many of our volunteers can groom and lead her, and she responds well to horsemanship cues and gentle reminders. She appreciates kind, consistent handling and benefits from a handler who can provide light leadership and help her stay alongside them when walking.
When Wilma came to SAFE, she was living with two senior off-track Thoroughbreds. She appears interested in the mares who live near her at SAFE, although we have not yet had the opportunity to assess how she would do living in a shared pasture or paddock with other horses.
Wilma has shown some reactivity toward our miniature horses when meeting them on a lead rope. She pinned her ears and lunged toward them, but responded quickly to her handler and settled down. Based on what we have observed so far, she may be best suited to a home with horses closer to her own size or larger. She has lived in herds in that passed but her compatibility with potential herd mates will need to be assessed.
Wilma is on a no-hay diet. She can graze on shorter grass and eats senior feed mash throughout the day. Her adopter will need to be prepared to maintain her current feeding routine and discuss any dietary changes with their veterinarian.
We are also working patiently with Wilma on picking up her feet. She has been less steady and more reluctant to hold up her hind feet for extended periods. We are using gentle, patient handling to build her trust, and working with her on an incline, with her front feet elevated, appears to help with possible arthritic discomfort.
Wilma will benefit from an adopter who is comfortable with senior horse care, willing to work patiently with her, and able to provide the appropriate support as her needs change with age.
