Standing in the sunshine, nibbling on some leafy alfalfa, the dark bay mare resembles any other horse. It’s hard to imagine that just four months ago she arrived on death’s door, a walking skeleton. This is Porsche, just about back to her ideal weight, looking very different than the horse we first met, instead like the one we knew was there all along.

The re-feeding and rehabilitating of a horse in Porsche’s condition can be touch and go, and we are lucky that Porsche had such a strong will to live. Her progress has been immense over the last four months, and we have watched as her belly has grown and her personality has unfurled. She still loves scratches on her withers, but isn’t always fond of hard brushes on her sides (that thin Thoroughbred skin!). She loves being outside until her internal alarm rings and she tells you in no certain terms that her quarter is up, and it’s time to go back inside. She likes having neighboring horses around her, but introduce a mule and the lady doth protest!

These days, as you walk around the property, you realize that Porsche no longer draws the eye for the reason she arrived at SAFE for. If you’re looking at that pretty bay mare, it’s simply to admire her, like any other horse.
