It’s time once again for Volunteer of the Month! Please join us in congratulating our March recipient, Heather Evans-Keliher!

Heather and Lola

Heather and Lola

Heather can be found at SAFE Harbor Stables on Mondays and Thursdays helping with feeding and farm chores.  You will recognize her by the friendly smile and trademark braids popping out from under her ball cap. Heather started with SAFE over year ago, and was barely trained when our volunteer program was briefly put on hold for our relocation. When the call went out to start up again, Heather was happy to dive back in and pick up where she left off. Heather assisted with our move, and with the Fall Work Party (along with her husband and son). In addition to working two shifts per week, Heather frequently answers the call to help out in an emergency. And if that weren’t enough, she also sponsors THREE SAFE horses (Lola, Maggie, and Skye) with monthly donations. Heather is a joy to work with, and SAFE is lucky to have her on our team. Thank you Heather!

In her own words, here is a little more about Heather…

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am originally from MI. I  lived in the Metro-Detroit area, in the same county, my whole life. Then almost 2 years ago my husband got a job with Boeing that moved us out here. The differences between the Mid-West and the West Coast are many. Besides the weather, the landscape, and the over all new environment, the biggest differences was having all our family and friends 2500 miles away. I had volunteered with the Michigan Humane Society and with Habitat for Humanity before we moved. I enjoy volunteering and working with animals but I had never worked with horses. The most time I spent with horses was a riding class that I took in college and I loved every minute of it!

How long have you been volunteering with SAFE?

I have been working with these great animals and these great people since Feb 2012.

What made you decide to volunteer with SAFE?

Since my son was in school, it was the perfect time find something to do. It was when I looked into making connections in my community here, that I found SAFE. I don’t know of  any little girl that doesn’t dream about having, riding, and loving ponies. I was thankful, that with VERY little horse experience, I was offered this opportunity to spend time at the barn.

Who is your favorite SAFE horse?

My favorite horse at SAFE is Lola. She was one of the first horses I met. Her sweet face and playful demeanor made a lasting impression. Although April was one of the first horses I made a connection with. I felt that if I can get this prickly mare to like me, I could get along with any horse!

Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your experience with SAFE?

I am so grateful to SAFE. It gave me something to do and be a part of when I didn’t know anyone. The time I spend at the barn is so fulfilling. I feel SAFE rescues and rehabilitates more than just horses.
