We cannot thank Shiloh’s foster mom Brittney enough for the work and care she is putting into this lovely mare. Here’s Shiloh’s training diary for the past several weeks. As you can see, with consistent handling, our girl is making amazing progress! Friday 6/1 Hand…

Bud Update

Bud’s been getting all kinds of attention recently. Last week he got his teeth floated & a sheath cleaning. This week he had a farrier visit and a bath! Since he hadn’t had a real bath we weren’t sure how he’d do with the hose so after he got trimmed today I hosed…

Buckwheat update

Great update on Bucky!!  He can be a bit of a woolly mammoth so foster mom Krissy clipped him to make him more comfortable. Doesn’t he look great? “We are having the best best best time with Buckwheat!  He has a nice new hair cut and is feeling better than ever! He…

JR under saddle

JR had his first ride today. Unfortunately he seems to suffer from sweet itch and his belly is covered in bites and scabs. He was a good boy, but wasn’t happy about being girthed up and was pretty distracted by the bites. We’ve been slathering his belly in SWAT and…

Mr Pibb — placed!

Congratulations to Laura Y. on her adoption of Mr. Pibb! Laura adopted Annie, a 9 year old Saddlebred mare, last summer. Unfortunately, Annie was not a good match for Laura and has been returned to SAFE (she is currently fostered at White Birch Farm where Mr. Pibb…

Oscar on his way to training

Oscar spent a day at SAFE before heading up to training. He enjoyed some time playing in the arena, where these gorgeous photos were taken.

You’d be grumpy too…

…if your teeth looked like this. Poor Louie had the terrible fangs… This is why we stress the importance of annual dental checkups for horses!

Strider settles in at SAFE

Strider is settling in at SAFE, making new friends. In the photos you see below, the holes on his back are skin grafts. They started out as tiny spots and after two months are the size of dimes. They will continue to expand out and hopefully fill out the unhealed…

Strider is “home”!

After 7 months at NWESC, Strider has finally been released to SAFE. He still requires daily treatment of his wound area, we are going to be able to handle it ourselves. We’re thrilled to have the big guy at the SAFE farm. [gallery link=“file” order=“DESC”…

Hello Scooter!

Scooter is notorious for being not very nice when in his stall, but all I got greeted with was nice ears! He seemed curious and interested in me but did not come over to say hi.

Oscar Update

Oscar had his teeth done this week and they were some of the worst teeth Dr. Hannah has ever seen. Huge points and ramps that caused ulcerations all along his cheek and had worn down the opposing teeth, in some cases down to the gum line. One broken tooth. He should…

April and Lola at Windy Tides

We made a last minute decision to bring a couple of the rescue horses to get some exposure the outside world at the Windy Tides horse show at the Monroe Fairgrounds. We brought two horses — April who is 7 and been under saddle about 9 months, and Lola, our 3 year old…

Dexter Update

Here’s an update from Dexter’s foster home: Ultimately, I’ve fallen in love with this little guy. If he was a hand taller or I was a hand shorter, I’d keep him. He’s smart, athletic, tough, and funny, everything I like in a horse. But I do think he deserves a rider…

JR Intake photos

New SAFE horse JR arrived at the farm today. He needs to put on weight, and he’s very muddy from his previous home with a terribly matted tail and bad cracks in his hooves. He’s a remarkably polite horse with great manners. He is going to make someone an awesome…

Oscar and Scooter update, updated!

Fire is coming along so nicely! Still working on being balanced at the canter. We love this boy!

Strider Skin Grafts Update

Seven days after after Strider’s skin graft procedure, Hannah removed the bandages to take a look. Strider has been a good boy, even though his banadages are itchy. It will be a bit more time before we know if it worked, but so far so good. Keep Strider in your…

April in the sunshine

Our friend Alexis shot these photos of pretty miss April enjoying a brief spell of sunny weather.

Never too much of a good thing…

Animal Cruelty is a very bad thing!

Reprinted with permission from Honeycutt’s Blog at honeycutt.safehorses.org I have a friend named Mr Pibb. He is a SAFE horse like me, and when he came to SAFE he was very, very pointy. This is how pointy Mr Pibb was.————–> I know that horses are not…

Sinatra and Aiden in the snow!

Sinatra and Aiden had a lot of fun in the snow. Being young geldings, they tend to play pretty rough but like most horses, it’s all for show — they don’t really want to hurt each other. Here are some photos of the two of them:
